If you’ve read the Bible, chances are you’ve read many of the famous books such as the Gospel of John, Gospel of Mark, Ezekiel, Genesis and others. You know some of the passages that emit inspiration and light for you to live a good and spiritual life. But probably you may not have heard of other writings that have parts of the Bible in them. In fact, they were not included in the Bible for a number of reasons but still have collected popular culture interest that makes people question if it’s truly supposed to be in there. They are the Gnostic Gospels.
What are the Gnostic Gospels? These are writings written by Christians who had a different perspective of the Bible. They are, what the world would call, the lost books of the Bible. Unlike the Bible, which is used worldwide and is accepted, these Gospels are considered non-canon meaning they have no place in the chronology of the Bible. If you try to put them together, it doesn’t make any sense. That’s why you won’t see any Gnostic Gospel in the Bible.
The Gnostic Gospels were written by Christians in the early era of the religion who believed to attain salvation you had to free yourself from the material plane of the world or to simply attain a spiritual enlightenment beyond what people are doing in the world. It wasn’t just about worshipping Christ; you had to go beyond what was taught to you. The teachings of the Bible were merged with other traditions from Eastern cultures making it a different take on the Bible itself.
The findings of Gnostic Gospels were in most cases, accidental and eventual because they ended up in many different places like one gospel was in a farm and another which was found a century ago but was published later. There is also a debate on the actual time they were written.
Gnostic gospels were not included in the Bible solely because they were cited as fraudulent work meaning the Gnostic Gospels were jibberish. The authors used the names of famous writers of the Bible to give it legitimacy but because experts noticed this, they classified the gospels as non-canon. Also, as mentioned earlier, if you put the Gnostic Gospels and the Bible together, it wouldn’t make sense. The writings will become contradictory. It also said that Gnostic Gospels teach nothing but false information about Christianity.
However, gnostic gospels have gained quite popularity in the world of pop culture. Authors such as Jodi Picoult and Dan Brown used them as references to their novels to show a different perspective of their stories. The film Stigmata has used gnostic gospel concept as a basis for the plot.
In many ways, Gnostic Gospels are writings of the Bible merged with different cultural writings from other countries that try to make a different take on the Bible. They are forged writings and make many contradictions to the Bible. So the next time you see a gospel that doesn’t quite match up to the Bible’s principles, you’re reading a Gnostic Gospel.
